How many toys should my child have?

Research has shown that kids respond better to fewer toys. In a study by the University of Toledo, toddlers were given either 4 or 16 toys. The toddlers who were given 4 toys were more engaged. In contrast, an abundance of toys reduced the quality of kids' play.

As a rough rule, before kids are mobile they should have around 4 toys in immediate reach. After they are mobile, around 8 is a good number.

Should I rotate my child’s toys?

Whilst kids should have only a few toys in immediate reach, this doesn’t mean those should be their only toys. Parents and caregivers should store toys and rotate them every week or every couple of weeks, to help prevent ‘toy boredom’. Keep an eye on your kids and look out for toys that they seem disinterested in, it could be time to switch those ones out of the rotation for a while.

How should I organise my child’s toys?

Kids’ educational learning toys should be displayed in a way that kids can see everything available to them, without being overwhelmed by the choice. It can be a good idea to group toys based on activity, for example, cooking toys can be grouped and musical toys can be grouped.
